Writing Update: February 2016

(It feels so weird to not have a No Angels section of this anymore! I suppose I’ll adjust.)

My monthly progress with this one has been halting, mostly due to essays and midterms. That being said, I’ve written 13k thus far and plan to be at 15k by the end of the month. It’s still wildly fun to write, but the fact that school has been getting in the way had been less than satisfying. I’ve also missed the previous two writing-treat-weekend sessions because of life’s hiccups. It’ll be nice to feel on-track again!

Still subbing. Still no response. *Bangs head on desk.* Waiting is just part of the game!

THE-STOLEN-SUN-BANNER

Again, this one is still out with no response. I’ve been toying with the idea of reworking it a little since my writing has developed over the years and I want to bring it up to par, so next time it comes back that’ll be what I do!

Ah yes, my sci-fi/horror short. It’s decided to take a very different, more compelling turn from what I originally intended, one that makes for lots of morally-gray areas. (A definite plus!) Again, this one feels halting in its progress, but that’s just how this month is going I suppose. I can tinker with the flow once I have a finished draft!

Writing Update: January 2016

the-final-advent-banner

At long last, The Final Advent has been published! This brings the No Angels trilogy to a close, which is a bittersweet moment for me. (There’ll be an entire blog post on this later.) This is a huge accomplishment for me, and is a promising way to start off the new year!

the-immortal-banner

I’ve finally started drafting The Immortal! I plan for the first draft to clock in around 70k, and have already knocked out 6k. To be honest, while first drafts famously suck, I am having a LOT of fun writing it! I hope you guys will like reading it just as much. ;)

The Stolen Sun

Still subbing away on this one! It’s at Tor right now, a place that can take months to respond, but hey, we’ve all gotta play the game at one time or another, am I right?

Where Gold is Born

Yep, this piece has already been published. I know. But! Since the previous place didn’t have exclusive rights over it (the window for their rights have since expired), I’m trying to squeeze another credit out of this one by subbing it as a reprint.

Heartless (WIP title)

My current sci-fi/horror piece! To be honest, drafting this one is . . . laborious. I feel like the story is quite literally dying under my fingers with each sentence, but that’s also how I used to feel about TSS, and look where that is now! I’m holding out hope for this one. I’m aiming for 6k for the first draft, and am at about 2k as it stands.

Stay tuned, everyone! What progress have you been making on your goals?

Writing Update: November 2014

no-angels-writing-update-banner

At long last, No Angels is back on the market in its new, revised form! Not only that, but I held a giveaway earlier this month with signed books (plus a poster!) up for grabs. Time to kiss this project goodbye, once and for all. Though I must admit, it’s a bittersweet feeling. I’d been working on this book for over a decade straight. But, all good things must come to an end. Onto the next project!

As far as other works in this trilogy go, I have finished a quick read-through of Collapsed Cathedrals and put the up-to-date version back on the shelves. It’s not a huge deal, – I was mostly just wanting to catch typos. (Darn you, Gaiman’s law!)

I’m in the process of editing The Final Advent daily! In addition to that, I’m handing off chapters I’ve already edited to beta readers piece by piece, as opposed to all at once, so that I can hopefully speed the process along. Also, I’ve already begun making the cover. I’ve decided this time around to record my process so you guys can see what it takes for me to make my covers from beginning to end!

The publisher who has Where Gold is Born is still putting together the collection, but it should (hopefully) be out before 2015.

I’m still subbing The Stolen Sun! I got another personal rejection this month, making 60% of the rejections I’ve received so far personal ones. Not a bad percentage. Now TSS is at its sixth destination, Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show. Fingers crossed!

the-immortal-banner

Guys, I gave in. I’ve started up my research for The Immortal again, plus I’ve been refining the outline more. Then again, I actually have the time for it now! I’ve never not worked on multiple projects at once, so it feels nice to begin piecing something together while finishing up another work. I’m about 80% of the way through the outlining/research process, so it shouldn’t be before long that I’m ready to sit down and start writing!

Only one month of writing in the year left. Stay tuned to hear more about my progress before 2014 leaves us for good!

Writing Update: October 2014

Whew! It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, so I’m long overdue.

no-angels-writing-update-banner

After many months of work, I have FINALLY completed the final rewrite for No Angels! Currently the only task I have left is formatting, so No Angels should be back on digital shelves shortly! I have a big surprise planned for its release, but you’ll just have to wait and see what that’s all about. ;)

Also, I’m glazing over Collapsed Cathedrals as well. I’d read some of it this past summer and noticed two typos, and am now freaking about there being more in the book. Ack. I’m already 25% of the way through, so I estimate I’ll be done reading it by the end of the week.

I’m over two thirds of the way through editing The Final Advent. To be honest, I’d put it on the back burner since I was trying to get No Angels’ edits done, but now that that’s over The Final Advent will go back to being project number one. I’d hit a few rough patches earlier on with the editing, but with the kinks slowly but surely getting ironed out, I’m optimistic things will continue at this faster pace.

short-fiction-wgib-writing-update-banner

In regards to The Stolen Sun, I’ve mostly just been querying it. (Plus, I’ve gotten two, two personal rejections! I feel weirdly accomplished to say that, ha ha.) However, due to the fact most places don’t want you to submit simultaneously in addition to taking forever to get back to you, I haven’t been able to query that much. Just five places. Oh well. Such is the game!

Where Gold is Born was picked up for publication in early spring, and the journal it’s being published in will be released in the next few weeks! So exciting! Also, I’m thinking about submitting it to other magazines as well as a reprint. The more credits you can get, the better, right?

the-cradle-writing-update-banner

The Cradle has taken a major back seat lately. What with all of the No Angels and The Final Advent edits, I haven’t had much time to do research for it, refine the plot outline, etc. Plus, I just feel like there’s something inherently wrong with the plot outline. (That’s one of the benefits of outlining, kids. You can see if something is broke before you have to spend 500 hours of editing in an attempt to fix it.) Either way, I’m bouncing some ideas around for a more tangible goal to give my protagonist. Something that’ll hopefully give me a more climactic conclusion.

the-immortal-banner

The Immortal, however? I worked on this one far more than justifiable. (I’ve forced myself to stop right now for the aforementioned edits, but it had to be done.) I’ve done character outlines, fleshed out the plot further, and done mountains of research. Plus I’ve written bits here and there. I know, shame on me, but I just can’t help myself! This is one of my favorite stories I’ve ever dreamed up, and I hope it’ll be one of your favorites too.

This one is definitely going to get written before The Cradle. It’s itching and burning to burst from my fingertips. (Who knows? Maybe I’ll get hit with an Elisabeth-Wheatley-esque all consuming writing frenzy and knock out a 260k book in a day! Haha!)

Things are moving ahead at a scarily fast pace, and I can’t wait to bring y’all the finished products!

What have you been working on/reading lately? Let me know in the comments below!

Writing Update – March 2014

no-angels-writing-update-banner

Due to health issues I’d been having recently, my editing for basically everything I’ve written fell by the wayside, this series included. Regrettably, this pushes back the release dates I gave everyone. But never fear! I’m back on track now, and am over half way done with the edits for both No Angels and The Final Advent.

short-fiction-wgib-writing-update-banner

The Stolen Sun is coming along nicely, and I’m on my very last stage of editing. It will be completed by the end of March, at which point I’ll begin submitting it to magazines. (I’ve already started compiling a list of places I’m going to send it to!)

On March 1st, I was supposed to get the contest results where I submitted Where Gold is Born, but the folks in charge pushed back the notification date by a month. It’s been an agonizing wait, but I’m excited to be less than a week away from finding out!

I have yet to start work on these novels, but both of them are absolutely ITCHING to burst from my fingertips. The only reason I’m holding off is because I want to remain true to the deadlines I gave you, and I’ve already been set back by my months of illness. Still, I’m extremely excited for these two stories and hope you are as well!

Just keeping everyone in the loop! Until next time.

Writing Update – January 2014

(I’ve never done writing updates before, but I saw the idea from author Elisabeth Wheatley and thought it was wonderful!)

no-angels-writing-update-banner

I’m currently slaving over this series to make sure it’s in top shape before I lay it to rest. Right now I’m revising the first book, No Angels, (checking for typos, rewriting portions, etc.), which should be completed by the end of spring at the latest. I’m shooting to rerelease it within 2-3 months.

I’ll also be glazing over Collapsed Cathedrals to take care of some typos, but I’m not doing anything major with that one. It shouldn’t take long whatsoever.

Finally, I’m also editing The Final Advent, the third installment in the trilogy. I’m aiming for a June release date, and things seem to be chugging right along!

short-fiction-wgib-writing-update-banner

Currently I have a flash fiction piece, “Where Gold is Born”, out on submission. I’m working on another short story, “The Stolen Sun”, that I’ve finished and have begun editing. I’ll be sending it out to magazines afterwards for (hopefully) some official publishing credentials. (Pin board for my short fiction.)

the-cradle-writing-update-banner

I hope to begin my fourth novel, – it’s WIP title being The Cradle-, this year. This will be a very different novel from anything I’ve ever written before, which is both intimidating and exciting. (You can find my pinterest board for it here, if you’re interested.) I unfortunately can’t give you a projected release date, as I’m going to seek a publishing house for this one. However, I hope to have a fully edited manuscript within one year of starting it.

——

As you can see, 2014 is going to be a busy year for my writing life! It’s promising and exciting for me to have all of this up ahead; a year in which I’ll wrap up my trilogy, possibly get a few publishing credentials, and begin a brand new novel.

Wish me luck!
